On the Wilhdside

Sheri and I recently returned from the CHEC homeschool conference in Denver. We go every year to hear great speakers that inspire us to keep discipling our children and to look at curriculum for the upcoming school year. This year we added to that purpose the hosting of a ministry booth in the vendor hall to raise awareness about GO WILHD and to sell some of our products.

We had a great time, met a lot of people, bought too many books, and were generally refreshed. However, we heard one speaker who did not inspire us. Now don't get me wrong. It wasn't because he was monotone or uninteresting. He was quite the opposite. He was passionate and accurate; flamboyant and prophetic. His name is Kevin Swanson and he was addressing the condition of our nation as it relates to the state of our families. Two of his quotes continue to haunt me day after day,

"41% of children born in the United States are born without fathers,"

and

"The family with both a mom and dad living together in the home has dipped below 50% in America."

Is that possible? Can it be true? How did we get here? Where are we going to end up? The fact is we are living in a country where the very fabric of society is unraveling at a terrific rate. We seem to be on a fatal crash course that we cannot get off of. Without a supernatural intervention from God Almighty we will eventually implode. Society will not be able to withstand the entitlements, welfare, crime rate, and debt that we have placed on it. The system will brake.

We can react in one of two ways. We can become depressed and fatalistic believing we are living in the last days and sit around and wait for Jesus to come back or we can seize the urgency of the moment to witness to as many people as possible, train as many fathers and mothers as possible, and help revive as many churches as possible because the days are short. We do not know when He will return.

While I do not pretend to have all the answers to our present predicament, I do know that fatherhood is at the center of both the problem and the solution. Fathers train up men. Without fathers boys will remain boys. We now have an entire society where 90% of our adult males are not men. They are boys who are maturing later and later because of how much time they are spending playing video games. Who will call them out? Who will train them to be men?

C.S. Lewis once said, "Fatherhood must be at the core of the universe."" He wisely understood that the Father Son relationship that brought everything in the universe into existence is the One that we must be reconciled to in order that we may know how to be fathers ourselves and raise up godly offspring (Malachi 2:15). Without fathers and husbands at home, more and more women and children begin relying on the government instead of God to take care of them. This will continue to lead us to elect leaders who promise the moon, grab power, and then shackle us with debt and regulation in the name of looking out for our best interest. Our forefathers knew that only an independent, responsible, armed, informed citizenry with strength of character and principles would be able to withstand the oppressive power of government. God help us to be the fathers we need to be and train up a new army of fathers who will stand in the gap for their families!
